Mason Berube Memorial Tournament
Mason Berube Memorial Tournament in Dresden is in memory of Mason Berube and his best friend Devon Tinus. Both passed away in a tragic accident March 13, 2009. Four Atom teams entered this Tournament including Dresden White, Dresden Maroons, Mt. Brydges and your Sobeys Lightning.

25 Nov 2016

What a great way to start a three day weekend and a Hockey Tournament.  Your Sobeys SouthKent Lightning team began their Friday (PA day) by meeting together in Highgate at 10 am.  Spending the day together gave the players a chance to bond and become a closer nit team. Then to add icing on the cake, they took a bus to the Dresden Arena. (Thank you Badder Bus lines).

The Lightning began the tournament by facing off against the Dresden White team at 5:00pm Friday and it only took 2 ½ Minutes for them to get on the scoreboard. The Lightning dominated the Whites for both the 1st and 2nd periods before Dresden began to push back, scoring at 7:13 and at :07 in the 3rd.  In the end the lightning received offence from #2 Paiton Desangher (2Goals 1Assist), #3 Vincent Vaughan (2Goals 1Assist), #8 Brady Pook (1Goal 2Assists), #10 Colin Day (2Goals), #16 Shane Brown (1Goal 2Assists), # 17 Ashton Clark (1Goal), #5 Josh Flemington (2Assist) and #11 Carter Gates (2Assists). But you can’t win hockey games with offence alone and the back checking of #12 Danielle Leque and #9 Owen Brown played key rolls for the Lightning.
In goal for the Lightning was #1 Logan Frazer.
Player of the Game: #11 Carter Gates.
Shots on goal: Lightning 25 – Whites 8
Final Score: Lightning 9 – Dresden White 2

Your Sobeys lightning were up against Mt. Brydges in the first of two games on Saturday. Mt. Brydges came into the tournament never losing a game this year and were the tournament winners for the last three years running. And they showed us why, with very effective defence against the usually high scoring Lightning team. But the Lightning had their chances, bouncing it off the crossbar and the post more than once.  It was Mt. Brydges #17 Cole Abbey that provided the show of offence scoring 6 of 7 goals and adding 1 assist to a 7-0 victory over the Lightning.

Shots on goal: Mt. Brydges 25, Sobeys Lightning 8

Final score:  Mt. Brydges 7, Sobeys Lightning 0

The second game of the day your Sobeys Lightning were facing off against the Dresden Maroons and where not about to loose two in a row in this tournament. Unfortunately for the maroons the Lightning were still feeling the pain of a 7-0 loss to Mt. Brydges just three hours earlier. The Lightning stomped on the gas at the first drop of the puck and never let off until mid way through the 3rd period. By then the score was 11-0.  Every time the Maroons tried to get going offensively the Lightning defense lead by #7 Drew Rumble, #9 Owen Brown and #16 Shane Brown would snuff it out. Lightning offence came from #2 Paiton Desangher (1Goal, 3Assists), #3 Vincent Vaughan (1Goal 1Assist), #4 Camden Blackburn (1Goal 1Assist), #7 Drew Rumble (1Goal 1Assist), #8 Brady Pook (2Goals), #10 Colin Day (3 Goals 1Assist), #11 Carter Gates (1Goal), #16 Shane Brown (1Assist), and #17 Ashton Clark (2Goals 2Assist).
In goal for the Lightning was #29 Dani Betterly.
Missing the game and listed as Day to Day with a lower body injury was #5 Josh Flemington.
Player of the game was #7 Drew Rumble.
Shots on Goal: Lightning 31, Maroons 8
Final Score:  Lightning 12, Maroons 2

Sunday Nov. 27, 2016

With the two wins against Dresden teams the Sobeys Lightning found themselves playing once more against the high flying Mt. Brydges team. With a good night’s rest behind them and still feeling the sting of a 7-0 loss the day before. The Lightning were primed and ready to meet Mt. Brydges again. However, 1 minute and 23 seconds into the game Mt. Brydges # 17 Cole Abbey scores a squeaker and takes an early lead.  That’s when your Lightning dug in their heals and began to play hockey. #5 Josh Flemington, #9 Owen Brown and # 12 Danielle Legue stopped any sign of offence from Mt. Brydges and #16 Shane Brown kept his sights on Mt. Brydges offensive star # 17 Cole Abbey while Lighting #10 Colin Day tied it at 4:31 of the first with an assist from #2 Paiton Desangher. Sobeys Lightning winger #3 Vincent Vaughan scored 35 seconds into the second with help from #4 Camden Blackburn and #7 Drew Rumble and before the 2nd period was over the Lightning had taken a commanding 4-1 lead into the third with offence coming from a second #10 Colin Day goal and a goal from #2 Paiton Desangher with assists from #17 Ashton Clark and #5 Josh Flemington.  Mt. Brydges tried disparately to mount a come back scoring two goals in the 3rd and with Lightning #8 in the dog house for crosschecking tried valiantly to tie it. But in the end a fantastic performance from the whole team without exception the Lightning handed Mt. Brydges their first loss of the year and won the Tournament Final 4-3.

In goal for the Lightning was #1 Logan Frazer.
Player of the game was #16 Shane Brown.
The shots on goal were Mt. Brydges 25, Lightning 15

and if I might add…
The Tournament MVP as voted by me. Sobeys Lightning winger #2 Paiton Desangher. His 4 Goals and 5 Assists lead his team in offence and he displayed strong TEAM leadership.
