Short Lived Leads
Your Atom Local League Sobeys lightning faced their first opponent of a Round Robin Playoff on Saturday. None other than there Blenheim rival the Chevy Lightning.  The two teams split the regular season matches with Sobeys wining the first game 5-4 and Chevy winning the second 6-1.  But it’s a new season now. It’s Playoff Season and none of the regular games matter.

Sobeys coaches give last minute instructions before the game.

By all accounts this game had signs of a great evenly matched game as these two teams finished 3,4 in the final standings with Sobeys having 28 points and Chevy with 26.
It was #17 Ryley Cammaert of the Chevy Lightning to open the scoring at 4:46 of the first with an assist from #9 Eric Romana. They had no sooner finished celebrating on the bench when Sobeys Lightning #2 Paiton Desangher took a pass from #11 Carter Gates and made no mistake finding the back of the net. The rest of the first and most of the second period neither team could get the upper hand. That was until Sobeys defenseman #16 Shane Brown took a pass from #5 Josh Flemington from down in the corner right of the Chevy goaltender and flipped it to #10 Colin Day who deposited the puck glove side for a 2-1 lead.  The Chevy Lightning almost match Sobeys by scoring a tying goal 1 minute 1 second later when #9 Eric Romana scored on the rebound from  a  #17 Ryley Cammaert shot.  Then with 1:28 left on the clock #17 Ryley Cammaert scored his second of the game this time from #11 Luke Vanhuele and #8 Jackson Kalp.  Up until this time in the game the whistle was only heard for an “offside” or “Icing” call. Things where beginning to get very rough when Sobeys #4 Camden Blackburn was pulled down by #17 Ryley Cammaert and slid head first into the side boards. The Sobeys trainer was called out onto the ice and after evaluating his condition assisted Blackburn off the ice and play was allowed to continue. During the ensuing power play Sobeys defenseman #14 Dani Betterly made a great pass from behind her net to #2 Paiton Desangher who broke through the Chevy defense and in all alone to score his second of the game and knotting it at 3. #7 Drew Rumble was awarded the second assist.   The Chevy Lightning took the lead once more at the 9:25 mark of the third when #17 Ryley Cammaert scored his third of the game from #4 Owen Ramboer. And once again the lead was short lived as Sobeys #3 Vincent Vaughan scored at 8:34 with #8 Brady Pook and #10 Colin Day getting the helpers.  It was beginning to appear  this game was going to end in a tie until #17 Ashton Clarkes shot bounced right out to #11 Carter Gates who fired a wicked shot stick side to give Sobeys the lead.   With 2 minutes left in the third and the Chevy Lightning still down a goal, Coach Matt Kalp pulled his goalie in favor of an extra attacker and his team made a valiant attempt to tie the game.  However the Sobeys players worked extremely hard to finish the game and Sobeys goalie #1 Logan Fraser stopped every shot giving the team a 5-4 win and 2 points for the playoffs.
Shots on goal: Sobeys  19,  Chevy 18.
Final Score: Sobeys 5,   Chevy 4.
