Ground Hog Tournament - Bantam Reps Get an "A" for Effort
It was an exciting weekend for the South Kent Lightning Bantam Reps, sponsored by Taco Bell.  These guys worked hard, despite injuries, to make it to the finals on Sunday, January 5th against Paris Wolf Pack.

It began on Friday night facing Parry Sound Shamrocks with two very well matched teams playing in the Annual South Kent Ground Hog Tournament.  So well matched that it took the last minute, 16 seconds to see the first and only goal, scored by James Mifflin on a breakaway.  The 1-0 shut out was well played by goalie James Larsh.  Saturday, the Lightning reps played two games to move on to Sunday's semi finals.  The first game, against Lambton Shores Predators resulted in a 3-0 win for South Kent and a shut out for goalie Daniel Rodger. Goals were scored by Aiden Rigby, unassisted, Derek Schieman and Braydon Segeren.  Jamie Pynenbrouck assisted on both of those goals.  Saturday night, the Lightning faced West Lorne Comets but unfortunately only scored once against West Lorne's 3 goals. Scoring for South Kent was Braydon Segeren, assisted by Brett Davidson and Kolby Caughy.

The Lightning earned enough points over the 3 games to take them to the semi finals on Sunday morning where they faced Mt. Brydges Cougars.  Kolby Caughy was first to score in the middle of the first period, assisted by Cory Beecroft and Brett Davidson, answered quickly by Mt. Brydges.  In the second, again Caughy scored with Beecroft's assist along with Mac Anderson.  Early in the third, Segeren put one away, with help from Schieman and Daniel Beunen.  The Cougars came back with two more in the third to end the game in a tie, forcing overtime.  With no score after 5 minutes of overtime, they went to a shoot out.  Both goalies were on their game but Cam Wellilngton finally ended it with a score of 4-3.  And onto the finals.....

Sunday afternoon was an action packed game against Paris Wolf Pack.  Paris were able to find a hole late in the first period in an effort to take home the trophy.  Both teams worked hard to blank the second, and then it all came down to the third where tensions were high, both on and off the ice.  With 10 minutes left in the third, South Kent's Beecroft was able to tie up the game, assisted by Ethan Gagnier and Kolby Caughy.  Not to be outdone, less than two minutes later, Paris pulled ahead with the winning goal.  It wasn't for lack of effort that this team went home with the win and South Kent Lightning Bantam Reps earned a Silver in their home tournament.  A great weekend with some great hockey and a nice way to end their Christmas holidays.  It doesn't get much more Canadian than that.
